Mission Projects for 2000

The RNDM Mission Projects scheduled for special financial help in 2000 are in Bangladesh, India South, Latin America, Myanmar, Philippines and Viet Nam.  You will find the details of each of these projects on the Donors page on the web site. These are some of the neediest groups amongst whom our Sisters are working. If you have a special interest in one of these mission projects, why not make it your personal mission effort for 2000 ?

Mangad, India teaching schoolReport from India South – Mangad, Kollam, Kerala State  <from Sister Rose Mary>

Mangad, about five kilometres away from Kollam is a poor village where most people earn their livelihood in cottage industry – mainly manual work with coir, the outer skin of the coconut.

At the request of the local people who wanted to educate their children to empower them to face the present challenges of their world, our Sisters, already established in Kollam, began an English Medium School. It is really encouraging to see how the students are progressing under the guidance of our Sisters.Teaching women in the village

The Sisters came to Kollam in 1988 to assist with pastoral ministries e.g. Basic Christian Community work, Family Prayer Units, liturgy and catechetics and healing ministry. Their vision is to uplift the poor and lower middle class families by working especially with women and girls.

The work in the school, and in the free homeo dispensary run by the Sisters, is maintained by donations from the agency Emmaus.

Report from Latin America – the Alti-Plano, Turco, Bolivia <from Jiovanna>

Gathering of catechists and leaders of prayerTurco is a country parish made up of farmers and shepherds, three hours by jeep from the nearest city and 4000 metres above sea level. The people are Aymara First Nation and mainly Catholic. Our Sisters are the pastoral presence in Turco, which is one of the five parishes served by their parish priest who comes to them about once a month.

The photo [left] shows a group of twelve lay people, representing eight villages of the Aymara First Nation who have gathered with three of our Sisters for a formation programme for catechists and leaders of prayer. The major working language is Spanish but our Sisters also learn the Aymara language in order to be more sensitive to the needs of the people.

Report from Viet Nam – education of poor students <from Sister M Madalena>

Literacy class for childrenOur Sisters in Viet Nam have chosen, as a special work, to help poor students whose families can not provide the opportunity for them to go to school. Several RNDM communities have organised literacy classes ; they help their students with schooling, with school materials, with clothing, with medication and basic nutrition supplements for rickets.
