In Southern India there are 7 communities.  Two communities are in Bangalore and one in each of: Almel, Amalapuram, Belvai, Mudu Perar and Quilon in Kerala State.

Report from India South – Three years at Almel, Bijapur <from Sister Mary Lucy>

Almel and its surrounding villages have very primitive and unhygienic living conditions. The people are economically, socially and culturally at the lowest level. The children, especially the girls, do not enjoy childhood.

Village VisitingSince arriving in the district our Sisters have begun programmes such as Balwadi (nursery) and empowering women for creative awareness. This work was begun in a rented house and out of doors but now we are trying to build a three-roomed house for this purpose.

The girls are dropouts after their primary education. Literacy among women is almost nil. If the girls do not continue their studies they will fall victim to child marriages. To save them from such an oppressive situation our Sisters have thought of opening a hostel for the girls so that they can continue their secondary school studies. There are five hostels for boys in this area. The Sisters would require a modest building to house about forty girls.

The target for our Sisters is to educate and conscientise women about their right and dignity, and to choose leaders from among them for further training. Our Sisters are very enthusiastic in their work and look forward to the day when their dream for these women and girls becomes a reality.

INDIA SOUTH

Project IS-1 : Computers for Preshitha Matha School, Mangad, Kollam - US$3400

Preshitha Matha is an English Medium school started by the RNDMs at the request of the local people in 1990. They are lower middle class and poor people of the coastal region of Kerala. Computer education has been made compulsory in schools but the resources of the people are very limited. The Sisters are hoping to provide four computers and suitable furniture for their small computer classroom.

They will raise US$500 locally and seek agency funding of US$700.
