SAMOA

  bfish.gif (306 bytes) Babelfish Translation

In 1970 three sisters from Sacred Heart Province, New Zealand, went to Western Samoa.  Our Sisters were returning for the first time since the early RNDMs withdrew in 1878.  However, this time, instead of returning to the more populated island of Upolu, we went to the larger but more isolated island of Savai'i.

The Samoan people are proud that their motto is: "Samoa is founded on God."  Christianity for them is very much a way of life.  So even though the population of Western Samoa is only 160,000 the response of the Samoan people to religious life has been very generous.  The young women who enter religious life come from a culture where traditions, respect and courtesy are the essence of life.  They live and work in an extended family in a relaxed way following the Lord's command, "Do not worry about tomorrow."  Materialism has still had little effect on them.  Most of the girls have had contact with the Sisters through the schools; some have been teaching in our schools.
